Logo & Form Redesign for Custom Apparel Client

Twenty something years of being a visual designer never really goes away, and even now I still do some small jobs for local businesses or friends. Just recently I worked through a redesign for my client’s contract and logo design. It’s also the first time I’ve worked with Canva as my primary design tool. When the client has something they’re familiar with and will need to modify the files themselves, you work with it, so I quickly picked up what I needed to know to work in this software which has become something of an internet darling over the last few years.

(To be clear, I love Canva. I think it’s very useful and serves a great purpose, and hey if they ever need a designer, I’m here! But I also think if you are looking to design more multi-page non-digital work, it’s not the best tool in the toolbox.) Normally for a project like this I would use the classic, tried and true, Adobe InDesign. It would allow me to make character styles and keep page consistency a bit better, but we work with what we have!

The client did a lot herself in Canva, including logo creation, before she came to me for a consultation. After the consultation, we agreed that all she needed was a tiny bit of a sprucing up to make the hierarchy work a bit better. Good thing information architecture is one of my specialties. It’s a skill that crosses the digital plains and honestly originates in the physical space, where you used to set every single individual letter on the printer before the newspaper could go out!

You can see how we improved legibility of the logo as well as minor color correction to ensure ADA compliance. We kept the playful aesthetic where possible and included an icy curve and highlights to showcase more of the ice skating aspect of the brand. The client was thrilled with our improvement of their brand icon.

And above you can get an idea of the before/after for the form itself and how we turned it from cluttered and confusing into clean and usable. We also included a consultation for file organization and customer statistics in our contract and this has allowed the client to build a more robust customer database with simpler filing for tax and retrieval purposes.

Next will be her website for a few user journey and ADA improvements! Until then, happy Monday and have a great week!
